Summary

A house with a terrifying appetite haunts a broken family in this atmospheric horror, perfect for fans of Mexican Gothic

When Jade Nguyen arrives in Vietnam for a visit with her estranged father, she has one goal: survive five weeks pretending to be a happy family in the French colonial house Ba is restoring。 She’s always lied to fit in, so if she’s straight enough, Vietnamese enough, American enough, she can get out with the college money he promised。

But the house has other plans。 Night after night, Jade wakes up paralyzed。 The walls exude a thrumming sound, while bugs leave their legs and feelers in places they don’t belong。 She finds curious traces of her ancestors in the gardens they once tended。 And at night Jade can’t ignore the ghost of the beautiful bride who leaves her cryptic warnings: Don’t eat。

Neither Ba nor her sweet sister Lily believe that there is anything strange happening。 With help from a delinquent girl, Jade will prove this house—the home her family has always wanted—will not rest until it destroys them。 Maybe, this time, she can keep her family together。 As she roots out the house’s rot, she must also face the truth of who she is and who she must become to save them all。

I literally walked around living my life while holding and reading the book, I fould not put it down! I’m disappointed。 This book just wasn’t creepy to me。 It didn’t get really creepy until the end。 Where it actively showed the things that were happening that they didn’t remember。 But by then the book was already at the end。 I wanted more。

this was one of my most anticipated releases of the year and maybe i had WAY too high expectations and that’s why it kinda disappointed me。。 i guess it wasn’t as haunting and creepy as I wanted it to be and although it does give very strong “Mexican Gothic” vibes it just didn’t do it for me。。 The more I read, the more bored I became and although the representation was incredible and themes talked about great, it just overall was not as special as I wanted it to be。。

She is a Haunting is a spine-chilling horror story that will leave you on the edge of your seat。 Set in a French colonial house in Vietnam, the story follows Jade Nguyen, who is spending her summer pretending to be a happy family with her estranged father Ba and her sister Lily。 Her goal is to survive five weeks in the house and get the college money her father promised her, but she soon realizes that the house has other plans。Loved the slow buildupsThe atmosphere of the book is claustrophobic a She is a Haunting is a spine-chilling horror story that will leave you on the edge of your seat。 Set in a French colonial house in Vietnam, the story follows Jade Nguyen, who is spending her summer pretending to be a happy family with her estranged father Ba and her sister Lily。 Her goal is to survive five weeks in the house and get the college money her father promised her, but she soon realizes that the house has other plans。Loved the slow buildupsThe atmosphere of the book is claustrophobic and bone-chilling, with slow-burning tension that keeps you hooked to each chapter。 The unique blend of French colonialism criticism with gothic thriller elements is commendable, and the writing style is compelling, albeit a little confusing with lots of different pronoun usage and quick transitions。I loved the charactersThe characters are well-developed, especially Jade, who is struggling to find her identity between two cultures and embrace her own sexuality in a traditional family。 The themes of family, identity, culture, and ghosts are well-woven into the story, making it both terrifying and thought-provoking。Final ThoughtsThe ghost of the beautiful bride who leaves cryptic warnings not to eat adds an element of mystery and intrigue to the story, and the way Jade has to confront the house's rot and face the truth of who she is and who she must become to save her family adds depth to the narrative。 。。。more

i was looking forward to reading this story, but i was sorely disappointed。 it did not get me hooked and i found myself frustratingly bored and confused rather than creeped out, extinguishing any enthusiasm i had for the bookif it wasn’t for the fact that this was an arc, i would’ve dnf’ed it long ago (i settled for skimming the last hundred or so pages)thank you to Bloomsbury YA and Colored Pages Tours for the e-arc!

This is a very haunting read。 Geddit? No? Okay, I'll stop。 'She Is a Haunting' by Trang Thanh Tran is an evocative story with a lot of beautiful, creepy and truly haunting imagery。 This wasn't as much of a horror story as it was a spooky one for me。 Often times the worst and most horror-inducing parts were the reminders of racism and colonialism and it's very real influence all across the world。 The french white supremacist "neighbours" in this story should watch their backs。 I wish this book ke This is a very haunting read。 Geddit? "She is a haunting" by Trang Thanh Tran is a debut novel that promises a spooky and romantic ghost story, but it falls short in its execution。 The writing is jarring and the author uses words and expressions that don't sound quite right in their context, which can pull the reader out of the story。 The main character, Jade, doesn't have a significant character arc, and her pettiness and childish resentfulness towards her father feel artificial and too immature for her age。The plot of the book rev "She is a haunting" by Trang Thanh Tran is a debut novel that promises a spooky and romantic ghost story, but it falls short in its execution。 The writing is jarring and the author uses words and expressions that don't sound quite right in their context, which can pull the reader out of the story。 The main character, Jade, doesn't have a significant character arc, and her pettiness and childish resentfulness towards her father feel artificial and too immature for her age。The plot of the book revolves around a haunted house in Vietnam where Jade is spending the summer with her father and sister。 When Jade starts experiencing strange sensations and encounters a ghostly bride with a cryptic message, she decides to stage some haunting events to scare her family into leaving the house。 However, the house seems to have a mind of its own and is determined to keep its inhabitants。Overall, "She is a haunting" has an interesting premise, but it failed to deliver on its promise for me。 The story doesn't hold well, and the characters feel fake and unconvincing。 I would rate it 5/10。 。。。more

Incredible。 First horror I’ve read and I’m so creeped out at how amazing writing this was。 It was funny, it was sad, it was creepy and disgusting。 It’s was such an awesome book, there’s no other way to describe it。 It did what it had to do and that ending really did not disappoint!

This was probably my most anticipated YA horror of the year and I was not disappointed! We’re following Jade a Vietnamese-American staying with her estranged father in Vietnam while he renovated a big French Colonial house for five weeks in exchange for the money she needs for college and freedom。 Soon she begins experiencing sleep paralysis, and seeing a ghost bride who warns her not to eat。 When neither her sister Lily, or her father believe her she and the daughter of her father’s business partner, Florence, decide to stage a haunting of their own。 However, the house has other plans。 This book has such a unique and interesting premise and is a genuinely good haunted house story with a twist。 Weird stuff starts to happen from the get go and we are thrown straight into the story which I loved。 It’s the perfect atmospheric gothic horror。 I found Jade, our main character, to be a little unlikeable at first but as you get to know her you understand where her cynical personality started。 I loved her relationship with Florence。 Jade is bisexual and I really enjoyed that discussion as well。 How Jade was continually fighting with her bisexuality but also saw college as “freedom” in a sense that she didn’t have to worry what her family would think while there。 This book also talks a lot about colonisation and the white people in this book genuinely made me want to bang my head against a wall。 I mean one of them literally has a degree in colonisation, can you be anymore clueless。 I might be wrong but I felt that the overall story was a metaphor for colonisation, how the house was trying to take over its inhabitants and make them subservient, it echoed the treatment of the Vietnamese people when Vietnam was colonised。 It made me so angry the blatant disrespect the white people showed towards the houses history and who actually built the house。 How the people who gave their lives to build these homes that while people claim as their own are forgotten in the process。 I found the writing style hard to gel with at times but it was also really beautiful so that was totally a me thing and in no way reflects on the author who is so talented and weaves a perfect, multi layered story flawlessly。 I’ve seen this book on so many people’s “Most Anticipated Releases of 2023” videos on YouTube and the buzz is warranted! I also think that fans of adult horror would really enjoy this even if you’re not normally a fan of YA horror definitely check this one out! Trang Thanh Tran is definitely an amazing author and I am so excited to read more from her! This will be released on the 28th February! 。。。more

Really great continuation of a tradition of haunted house novels -- I saw a lot of references to classics like The Haunting of Hill House (both in the naming of Florence and in the "good god whose hand was I holding" moment) and The Yellow Wallpaper。 I think it might have benefitted from being shorter like those classics, because the pacing was little off for me sometimes。 It was extremely creepy and gory, so be warned。 It also triggered a horrible memory I thought I had permanently erased from Really great continuation of a tradition of haunted house novels -- I saw a lot of references to classics like The Haunting of Hill House (both in the naming of Florence and in the "good god whose hand was I holding" moment) and The Yellow Wallpaper。 I think it might have benefitted from being shorter like those classics, because the pacing was little off for me sometimes。 It was extremely creepy and gory, so be warned。 It also triggered a horrible memory I thought I had permanently erased from my brain after twenty years when I woke up in the middle of the night and watched an episode of a documentary-style ER show my mom had turned on to fall asleep to。 I definitely won't be thinking about that ALL DAY and giving myself the creeps when I touch my head。 。。。more

2。75 stars。 this book lacked clarity (especially with the prose but also plot) and focused too much on telling and not showing character emotions。The stars I gave are for the excellent use of symbolism (pertaining to colonialism) and the creep factor。

This book is set in Vietnam, and it was interesting to read how this adds to Jade’s identity crisis, for lack of a better word。Jade is Vietnamese American and constantly feels torn “other” is both cultures。 In the US, she feels too out-of-place, especially with her family situation and trying not to upset her mother, who works long hours as a nail tech to support their family。 Yet in Vietnam, she doesn’t feel at home either, since she doesn’t speak the language very well。 It doesn’t help that she’s staying with her father, who left their family four years ago without so much as a backward glance。Jade is also bisexual, something she hasn’t explicitly told anyone。 This all amounts to her feeling “too much” everywhere, not fitting in anywhere。 I liked how her sexuality isn’t necessary something she has to come to terms with, but instead, she has to learn how to open up to others in general。 I feel like Jade is generally in a self-destruct phase right now, and I just loved following her character。 Tran really balances both Jade’s finding herself with the plot so well。As for the plot, I was creeped out yet couldn’t stop reading。 The house Jade’s father is restoring is a French colonial house in Đà Lạt, so of course it has its secrets。 As she learns more about the house’s history, both through research and dreams one of the ghosts shows her, she’s horrified by the injustices the Vietnamese people living in the house experienced, including her own great-grandmother。 Even now, she learns a little about the French family who built the house from a condescending white couple who are funding her father’s work。I also liked the side characters and Jade’s dynamics with them。 Florence, in particular, proves to be a tricky character; she’s very bold and agrees to Jade’s plan to “haunt” the house despite the fact that Jade was continually rude to her。 The two of them do click very easily though, and I really liked their scenes together。Other than her father, Jade is very close to her mother and younger sister。 She feels the need to protect all of them, including her hardworking single mother, which is very eldest-daughter-of-immigrants of her。 Even when she fights with Lily, who’s determined to forgive their father, she knows she has to keep her out of trouble and protect her from the horrors going on in the house。 Jade’s complex relationship with her father, whom she hates for leaving their family yet can’t help but love him, was interesting to unravel throughout the story。She Is a Haunting explores a complex identity and the scars colonialism leaves behind, even decades later。 I enjoyed the story and really liked the characters, especially the protagonist’s characterization。 If you’re in the market for a horror novel with intriguing characters, I think you should pick She Is a Haunting up! original review:yeah I feel like。。。parts of this book just didn't connect as well as I thought it could've。。。but otherwise! I liked the character and it was very intriguing。 。。。more

This book is after all, a YA novel。 If you get tired of reading about an angsty, sulky teen who feels like no one understands her than this is not the book for you。 It very nearly wasn't the book for me, but when I started ignoring the drama Jade wanted to bring to every single scene, I did find an interesting story there。 Jade is stuck with her estranged father in Vietnam during her summer before college。 He has agreed to pay for her first year of college if she will help him with his latest pr This book is after all, a YA novel。 If you get tired of reading about an angsty, sulky teen who feels like no one understands her than this is not the book for you。 It very nearly wasn't the book for me, but when I started ignoring the drama Jade wanted to bring to every single scene, I did find an interesting story there。 Jade is stuck with her estranged father in Vietnam during her summer before college。 He has agreed to pay for her first year of college if she will help him with his latest project -- the restoration of the family home into a local B&B。 When she arrives she actually learns about the more sinister history。 Jade's ancestors were actually servants in the house which was owned French colonists who clearly had that colonist mindset about the people they employed。 Like all white people, even the ghosts of the colonists can't let go of their racist ideas, or the house they lay claim to。There are a lot of comparisons to Mexican Gothic and The Hacienda, and I can sort of see it, but this book leans very young, and a lot of things that are discovered by Jade and her friend are sort of incidental。 I wish there had been more explanation about the history of the French in Vietnam, and how that led to the war, and the United State's involvement in it。 I also wish the misunderstanding white scholars have of colonialism was hit home a lot harder。 It was mentioned several times very briefly, but there wasn't much about how annoying it is for the people who have had colonization forced on them to listen to white people explaining how it's actually not that bad。 As a haunted house story I wasn't that scared while reading it, and I couldn't feel Jade's fear either。 This wasn't bad, but I wasn't thrilled with it。 。。。more

This is a wonderful ghost story about the hauntings of lost family, lost culture, lost childhood, and the devastating effects of colonialism on everyone involved。 It reads quick and cutting。 The prose could be better and there is some jump cuts that don’t make sense, some information gets awkwardly communicated, but as a first novel this shows great promise。
